Minimum age
Students of English courses must be over the age of 18 by the course start date.
Application process (for students of English outside the UK)
You can enrol on one of our courses by contacting us via email, phone or by visiting us in person. Please apply as early as possible so we have time to process your application and organise accommodation.
Once you have advised us of your desired course and schedule, we will send you an application form and organise an assessment to determine your level. After we have received the completed application form, we will send you a course offer with an invoice for a non-refundable deposit of 30% of the cost of the course, the registration fee, the accommodation fee, and any applicable courier fees.
When we have received payment of this invoice, we will send written confirmation of the course booking, an invoice for the remaining balance and a welcome pack including school information, timetables, travel information and useful phone numbers.
If you have booked accommodation through us, we will send full details, including directions as soon as they become available. Please send us details of your travel arrangements to the UK as soon as they become available, even if you have not booked an airport transfer service with us.
Let us know immediately if you need to change your course dates due to unforeseen circumstances or if your visa application has been refused.
For students of English/Other Languages applying from within the UK

Please never send cash by post.
Visas
We are legally prohibited from advising students regarding visa applications. For information on the visa application process, please see https://www.gov.uk/study-visit-visa or contact your local authorities. We are under obligation to report students whom we believe to be in breach of the terms of their visa.
In the case of visa refusal, you will receive a full refund minus the registration fee and courier charges plus any other costs we may have incurred throughout your application. An accommodation cancellation fee may apply if you inform us of the refusal too late.
Cancellations
If you need to cancel your course for any reason, please let us know as soon as possible.
A cancellation fee will apply as follows:
Refunds of tuition fees will not be paid once the original course date has passed.
Even in emergencies, homestays need to be cancelled 21 Business Days prior to the originally scheduled arrival date and inlingua will refund the fee less the non-refundable booking fee of £60.
Cancellations less than 21 Business Days* will be charged with one week’s homestay (£250, £300 or £350 depending on the category). Please see below for details regarding course cancellation. Cancellation:
- Up to 28 Days prior to the original course start date*: inlingua Edinburgh will keep the deposit + non-refundable fees.
- 21 – 27 Days*: International House Edinburgh will keep 40% of the total amount.
- 14 – 20 Days*: International House Edinburgh will keep 60% of the total amount.
- 7 – 13 Days*: International House Edinburgh will keep 75% of the total amount.
- 6 days* or less: International House Edinburgh will keep 100% of the total amount.
Once the original course start date has passed there will be no cancellation. *The term ‘days’ mentioned in our cancellation policy refers to the original course dates booked and paid.
Where the rescheduling/change of start date for any course has previously been agreed upon, no refunds would be due in the event of a cancellation request for the same course, regardless of the amount of notice given.
A 30% non-refundable deposit is due at the time of booking. The remaining balance is due three weeks prior to the course starting or in full if the booking is made less than 4 weeks prior to the course starting.
You have a legal right to cancel your course within 14 calendar days of the date of your booking. In this case, we will refund all fees including the deposit.
If you have made your booking within 14 calendar days of the start date, the cancellation fees listed above will apply.
If you need a visa support letter to obtain your visa, please note that this letter will only be issued and sent after 14 days has expired to avoid the misuse of visas and to ensure this is a serious application.
Once the original course start date has passed, or a booking has been amended once already, students or agents will be unable to cancel or reschedule and no refunds will be payable.
Please arrange adequate insurance to cover your course fees in case you need to cancel for health or other personal reasons.
Our rights to cancel and applicable refunds
We will not be liable or responsible for any failure to perform or delay in performance of, any of our obligations under these Terms and Conditions that is caused by an event outside our control. “An event outside our control” is defined as “any act or event beyond our reasonable control including but not limited to: strikes or other industrial action, civil unrest, terrorist attack or threat of terrorist attack, epidemic, adverse weather conditions or other natural disasters”.
If such an event should occur affecting the performance of our obligations under these Terms and Conditions, we will contact you as soon as reasonably possible to notify you. In this case, we will, where possible, propose alternative arrangements (which may include alternative dates) for your course. If the alternative arrangements proposed by Us are unsuitable for any reason, and cancellation was requested instead, no refunds would be due, therefore any (pre-paid) balance would be forfeited.
Group courses (daytime)
In the case of only 1 or 2 students in a group, we reserve the right to reduce the lesson total as follows:
- 4 group lessons = 2 private lessons
- 6 group lessons = 3 private lessons
If you are unable to attend a lesson, please notify us as soon as possible. There are no cancellation or rescheduling privileges for group courses. If you are more than 30 minutes late for your morning lesson, you may be refused entry into the classroom until after the 11.00 break to avoid disrupting other students.
Group courses (evening)
In the case of less than 5 students in a group, we reserve the right to adjust the course length as follows:
- 5 – 10 students = 12 weeks
- 4 students = 10 weeks
- 3 students = 8 weeks
If you are unable to attend a lesson, please notify us as soon as possible. There are no cancellation or rescheduling privileges for group courses. No refunds are possible once the course has started. In the event that a course has to be cancelled before it is due to start, a full refund will be given.
Private/duo lessons
Extending your course
If you wish to extend your course at any time, we will add the number of additional weeks to your original booking.
Depending on your course, this may mean you may pay a lower price per week for the extended part of your course, depending on which price bracket your booking falls into.
You are responsible for amending your visa to be in line with your extended stay (if applicable). We can provide you with a letter confirming the extension (if required).
